Ha Ha, JK.

I really just don't have the time very often to post to LJ.

You would do better to follow me on Twitter or Facebook. This is trivial if you know my real name.

If you want to follow me, and don't know my real name, drop me a line on LJ

You scored as Enterprise D (Star Trek)

You have high ideals and know in your heart that humanity will continue to evolve in a better people. No matter what may happen, you have faith in human beings. A rare quality. Now if only the Borg would quit assimilating people.

Enterprise D (Star Trek)

Well, I'm fairly sure I didn't fudge any of the questions. Unless I am fooling myself.

I am guessing that Kirk's Enterprise was not an option, but that's the ship where I'd fit in best if I had to pick.

Subject:I hate Macs ?

My attention was recently drawn to a discussion on a February Guardian article. In it the author spends his time "slagging off" Macs and their users.

At the end of the day, I just don't get such pieces from either side of the "Mac vs. PC" divide. Its technology. Evaluate it using engineering practices, make a decision and then move along. I am however an engineer and a geek... so I love babbling about this stuff.

So- here I go!

A mildly offensive little bit of fictional silliness. It entertained me to write it, maybe you'll get a couple of giggles out of it. Of course it is offensive, so if you offend easily save me some drama and don't read it.

Subject:Doing things well is hard... and worth it.

Doing things well takes passion and dedication. You have to be single minded. You have to endure things you can't stand.

You may know I played hockey, and I failed to reach my goal of playing in the NHL. Closest I got was a walk on tryout with an AHL team. My claim to "greatness" ? They didn't send me home the first day.

In order to fail I did the following:

  • I ran 62 miles a week, even though I despise running.
  • I worked out 2 hours every day at the gym. I should note that I loathe gyms
  • I quit my tech jobs and took a job at a rink paying dirt so I could skate 2-6 hours a day.
  • I didn't eat any of my favorite foods for years, and you should know how much I love to eat.
  • I trained and played with injuries... broken feet, broken fingers and innumerable bruises, cuts, strains and sprains.

What did I get in return? Its a cliche, but I gave the game a tooth. I have two bad knees, a bad back and a left bicep filleted from the tendons. Every day pain wakes me up and pain puts me to sleep.

So, what can I say about myself as a hockey player? I'm OK. I can hold my own. Most of the time.

I'm not even a has been. I am an almost could've been that never was.

I did all of that to myself because I LOVE the game. I'd do it all over again, even knowing what I know now. I have no regrets whatsoever.

That there is the point of this sad sad story. Find something you LOVE, and just do it.

The world is fond of making sure that there is always some task that needs doing ... something, anything to stop you. Don't let it.

Always remember: What I wrote above is the price of failure. Plan to work much harder to succeed at whatever it is you are doing. Its worth it.

Don't let anything get in your way.

Starting with this story.

Police Kill Man After a Queens Bachelor Party

I have read accounts of people calling for caution and calm heads as the police are investigated. Caution and calm heads should have been used BEFORE the police fired 40+ rounds into that car... and the neighborhood. Last I checked the penalty for crashing your car, even three times in succession, is not death before trial by inept firing squad.

Subject:Much Ado About Nothing: The iPod Virus Story

From CNN/Reuters:

NEW YORK (Reuters) -- Some of Apple Computer Inc.'s iPod digital music players shipped in the past month carry a computer virus, according to a posting on Apple's technical support Web site.

Apple said since September 12, less than 1 percent of Video iPods -- pocket-sized devices that can play music files and video clips -- left its contract manufacturer carrying the virus RavMonE.exe, which affects computers running Microsoft Corp.'s Windows operating system.

"So far we have seen less than 25 reports concerning this problem. The iPod nano, iPod shuffle and Mac OS X are not affected, and all Video iPods now shipping are virus free," the company said on the site.

Apple said the virus can be detected and removed using many popular anti-virus software programs.

Representatives for Apple and Microsoft were not available to comment further Wednesday morning.

Apple's Support Page for this issue

The choice quote from Apple's page:
As you might imagine, we are upset at Windows for not being more hardy against such viruses, and even more upset with ourselves for not catching it.

Basically everyone is making a HUGE issue over something that is really irrelevant. Apple says they have recieved less than 25 reports... let's just assume that there are a thousand infected iPods out there. (A figure which I would be VERY skeptical about!) Apple sold over 2 million iPods in the period in question. That would mean the actual rate of infected iPods is 0.05%... assuming 1000 infected iPods!

If we use Apple's figure of "less than 25" that would mean that less than 0.00125% of iPods are infected. Less than 1 in 100 thousand.

Subject:Senate Approves Warrantless Searches

The Senate voted to approve Warrantless Wiretapping. Here is the complete text of The National Security Surveillance ACT. This is an illegal act in contravention of the Constitution.

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.
- The Constitution of the United States, 4th Amendment

This is a very serious issue for me ? How serious ? Let's look at a few quotes which spring to mind:

"Our natural, inalienable rights are now considered to be a dispensation from government, and freedom has never been so fragile, so close to slipping from our grasp as it is at this moment."
-Ronald Reagan
"If you will not fight for the right when you can easily win without bloodshed; if you will not fight when your victory will be sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a small chance of survival. There may even be a worse case: you may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves."
-Winston Churchill
"The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants."
-Thomas Jefferson
"I know not what course others make take, but as for me: give me Liberty, or give me death."
- Patrick Henry

Yes.... THAT serious. I am using the soap box here. I am about to use the jury box. I always use the ballot box... let's not get to the point where I reach for the ammo box America

Subject:LJ Friends

If there is one or more people on your friends list who makes your world a better place just because they exist and who you would not have met (in real life or not) without the Internet, then post this same sentence in your journal.

I generally despise the "chain meme" junk that often crops up on the Internet, be it chain emails or stuff like this. I post it because it made me think of the people I know. I post it because following such memes over to OK Cupid led me to meet a few other great people.

I have a VERY small LJ Friends List. Only 5 mutual friends.

chelona I barely know, so I can't say much about her. She did help me through a rough patch recently... and eventually I'll get around to meeting her.

velvetchamber is a great person and often cheers me up unexpectedly.

lizhume is my current girlfriend in real life, and hopefully one of those friends I keep forever.

That ends the folks I know only because of the Internet.

mirandakali is someone I've known for about 20 years, but we've never been great friends. I used to drop by where she worked at Chesapeake Knife and Tool whenever I was nearby for a quite a few years. She is someone I always wanted to know better. I actually know her better now on LJ than I ever did in real life. Funny how life is.

My last mutual friend, lanchid also matters a great deal to me. We have been friends for 19 years this October. She is the entire reason I got an LJ. She's been a great friend and even when we fight she always proves worthy of the love I have for her.

Subject:The Pentagon wants US Soldiers dead ?

At least that's what I think when I read this article where "Army Brass" decides not to purchase an effective defensive system because it might replace a system they want to develop.

I think that the Army should cancel the contract, purchase the system, and then study it carefully. Then they should award Raytheon a new contract to develop a follow-up system with improved capabilities over the Israeli system.

As good as the Israeli system is the US has a bunch of other needs. For one we need the system to be able to share information about where the attack came from with our own targeting systems, and the system should be able to pass on the information that it responded to an attack up the chain of command. In other words the system is a natural for an integration follow-up by US defense contractors.

As an additional benefit the US military could learn from the Israeli "Trophy" system, and its eventual system would effectively be a second generation system, able to intercept RPG's and other light munitions further out, thus extending protection to dismounted infantry accompanying the vehicle.

All in all this seems like a short sighted loss that trades the lives of US soldiers, US taxpayers money and future military defense capabilities for the opportunity to drop a few pennies in the feed trough of some US defense contractor. (Raytheon)

The real question is what would motivate "Army brass" to make such a horrible decision ? There is some concern over the US employing an Israeli weapons system- even an entirely defensive one. I discard that out of hand, because we can't harm our own public image any more than we do by having soldiers walking the streets of cities in a foreign land with no end in sight.

That leaves the potential corruption amongst general officers in the US Army. That is a huge cause for concern, and it should be investigated with great urgency.

Subject:Star Trek Original Series Getting New CGI Effects as Part of HD Remastering

I just read the news that Star Trek is getting a new set of special effects for its 40th anniversary High Definition remastering and HD broadcast.

To get an idea of what this may look like look at this effects test done by a single artist.

While the news might bring to mind the travesty of Lucas's Star Wars Special Editions, I think the effects remake of Star Trek is very essential when moving to HD.

Well, times have changed. If CBS broadcast the series without an HD remastering on HD channels it would look blurry at best. Since the original film plates for the series still exist remastering is a simple decision- because film has all the resolution needed for HD and then some. The old effects look very dated, which I don't mind at all. The problem is that, in higher resolution, they look more fake. You can clearly see all the corners the original effects artists cut "knowing" that their work would never be seen anywhere other than the weekly NBC broadcast.

The only thing that troubles me is that it appears that CBS has chosen to use its own in house effects teams. Those are excellent artists, but I really hope they at least bring in people from the effects facilities that have worked on Star Trek in the past. I think they'll be fine without such expertise, but I would feel more confident of success if they had it on hand.

The next question is how far will they go ? If you look at the effects test above a lot of the effects shots are completely remade to match today's effects standards. That includes reframing shots, moving the "camera" and other things that were not feasible during the 1960's. Frankly I think that most of the scenes in the effects test are well done. How far can you stray from the original though in making such improvements.

As a side note to people dealing with film and video production, this is why you should always work to the highest standard your toolset allows, and frankly why even small scale productions today should at least be shot in high definition. You have to plan for the future.

Look in the effects test at the sets and props used in live action scenes. They look good when combined with the new effects, in fact it could be argued they look better and fresher. This is because they had to stand up to the full quality of 35mm film.

Had Star Trek been shot with the video cameras of the day this sort of remastering would be impossible. Instead we would undoubtedly be faced with a remake. While shooting in film is still prohibitively pricey shooting in HD is becoming constantly more affordable. It is cheap insurance for the future of your project.

Subject:Greenpeace report on computer recycling

Greenpeace recently released the Green Electronics Guide which claims to rank companies in their efforts to make "green" manufacturing decisions.

A lot of people will misread this report. The last paragraph of the opening document says, "Companies are ranked solely on information that is publicly available." In other words ladies and gentlemen, somebody at Greenpeace read these companies websites and based this ranking entirely on that information which may or may not have a thing to do with the companies actual performance.

There was no attempt at reviewing hardware itself, which could tell people a lot. There was no effort to uncover what actually happens at companies- just a review of the companies press releases essentially.

In other words its a vastly more than useless report. It may in fact be highly misleading, because there was absolutely no investigation of actual practices. Apparently nobody at Greenpeace even called the companies and asked for comments or supporting documentation- or anything.

This lack of investigation and analysis is part of the reason Greenpeace continues its slide into irrelevance.
